Texas Nursing Home Neglect Rates

The vast majority of the elderly residents in Texas nursing homes depend on government programs of one type or another in order to receive quality nursing home care. However, recent federal funding cuts and possible Texas-wide cuts to similar programs have many Texas residents wondering what the effects of less money for elder care will have on the millions of Texas who need assistance in their old age.

This year alone, Texas will see $725 million in federal Medicare cuts and possibly even more cuts in state Medicaid. Many in the nursing home sector worry that these cuts will led to lowered quality of care in nursing homes, a shortage of staff, high rates of nursing home neglect and higher rates of nursing home abuse. Specifically, the quality of nursing home staff and the number of nursing home staff may drop, creating a more dangerous environment for the elderly nursing home residents that require daily care and attention.

Elderly should be given equal attention. They deserve to be treated well. They are the part of the community. As a nurse I always finding it hard to comprehend why these people are always neglected which indeed, needs a lot of attention. The government should try to look at least a better solution but not forsaking the situation of the elderly.

My most recent experience in the long term care as a registered nurse is the nurse staffing to patient ratio of 48 pts, leading to the neglect that you mention. Without regulatory requirement I do no expect it to change, and it creates a legal and ethical dilema for the healthcare staff. This is a big part of why the facilities can not keep staff. This must be addressed for our elderly and disabled to be assured quality care.
