Allstate Best Driver Report: Houston & Dallas Still Low On The List

The Allstate Insurance Company has released its annual Best Drivers Report, which ranks the largest 200 cities in the country from best to worst when it comes to road safety and traffic accident rates. While cities like Fort Collins and Boise were praised for their low rate of car accidents, many cities in Texas, including Dallas and Houston, did not fare as well.

Dallas ranked a dismal 167th out of 200 on the 2011 report – only slightly ahead of the worst city for drivers in Texas, Garland. Garland ranked 177th on the list. Houston was ranked slightly higher, at 155th on the list. According to Allstate’s research, a Houston driver can expect to get into a car crash on average every 7.8 years, or 26 percent more often than the national average. The best drivers in Texas are in Laredo, where drivers can only expect an accident every eleven years, nine percent below the national average. They were ranked 28th in the best drivers report.

When it came to ranking traffic accidents in cities with a population over one million people, Houston and Dallas fared better than many other metropolises. Houston ranked fourth of nine, while Dallas ranked sixth. The least safe big cities for drivers? Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
