Big Rig Accidents | Avoiding Big Rig Crashes on a Motorcycle

Being on a motorcycle is thrilling, but it’s also dangerous. If you’re a good driver with good safety equipment, you‘re in the best position possible. There are certain vehicles, however, that pose huge risks to motorcyclists. If you’re involved in a big rig crash on a motorcycle, you’re odds of being seriously injured or killed are very high. You have to take responsibility for yourself and learn how to share the road with these huge vehicles. Unfortunately, there are some truck drivers out there who are going to be threats no matter how careful you are.

First and foremost, stay away from big rigs as much as possible. When you’re riding alongside or behind one of these monsters, you’re at a high risk for being involved in a big rig collision. These vehicles create a strong current of air around them. In some cases, this wind may be strong enough to dismount a motorcyclist. Either stay behind the vehicle, out of the danger zone created by the winds or get past the vehicle fast. Provided you have a powerful bike, you can use your speed and agility to get away from these hazards as quickly as possible.

Remember that big rig crashes oftentimes occur because the driver simply could not see the person alongside or behind their vehicle. This is not always the driver’s fault. The rule of thumb is to always keep the trucker’s mirrors in view. If you can see their mirrors, they can see you. If you cannot see their mirrors, the trucker has no idea where you are in relation to their vehicle, if they even know you’re there at all. Making sure that the trucker can always see you is literally a matter of life and death for motorcyclists.

If you’re injured in a crash, consider calling a vehicle accident lawyer. They can represent you against the trucker or the company they work for. These lawyers won’t be intimidated out of representing you and they won’t be convinced to accept the first settlement amount that the trucking company offers. If the trucker or the employer was at fault or negligent, you have a right to seek compensation. Make sure that you don’t cheat yourself by accepting a check from the trucking company without first contacting a lawyer about the matter. It may be the difference between a suitable settlement and a pittance.
