Car Accident Attorney | Safe Winter Driving and Vehicle Maintenance

Winter driving requires that your vehicle be well-maintained. Not only will you be driving in more dangerous conditions, you’ll also be pushing your vehicle harder and, thus, the oil, lubrication and other maintenance tasks become even more important than normal. To make sure that you’re treating your vehicle right, and making the road safer for yourself, consider the conditions you’ll be driving in.

Winter means snow in some areas of the nation and heavy rains in others. Both of these conditions affect the amount of traction you get when driving. To make sure you have the optimal amount of traction, have your tires checked and, if needed, replaced. Rotating your tires is also very important to keeping your vehicle on the road, so be sure to have this done regularly.

Driving at night means that your chances of getting into an accident are much higher. In many cases, a Dallas car accident could have been avoided if the driver had not been outdriving their headlights. Outdriving your headlights means driving at a speed that makes it impossible to stop before you hit the farthest thing you can see clearly with your headlights. Remember that road signs are not a good measure of this; they’re made to be reflective and visible at long distances. Look at road features as you come up on them and make sure you could brake or swerve to avoid them if you had to.

Remember that the sun is lower in the sky during the winter and that, at dusk and dawn, it may blind drivers travelling into it. Turn on your headlights if the sun is at your back. This is particularly important to commuters, who tend to be on the road during these hours of the day in the later months of the year.

If someone crashes into you, you may want to consider speaking with a vehicle accident lawyer. There is a chance that you could get compensated for your injuries and your destroyed property, particularly if the driver was being very unsafe. When someone is negligent on the road, they risk everyone around them, not just themselves. When you’re out on the roads this winter, remember to brake sooner if the roads are wet, to slow down during the nighttime hours and to watch out for people who aren’t doing either, and who put you at risk.
