Cerebral Palsy and Growing Up

What Is It Like For Children Growing Up with Cerebral Palsy?

In the past, it was easy to miss cerebral palsy in infants. Thanks to better medical scanning technology and better techniques for noticing the telltale symptoms of this disorder, however, is much more likely that an infant will be diagnosed with this disorder in a timely fashion. There are still, however, issues with cerebral palsy that are not entirely noticeable until the child reaches an older age. Many of these issues have to do with mobility and with coordination.

The Disorder

Children with Cerebral PalsyCerebral palsy results from a certain type of brain injury. It generally happens when the child is starved of oxygen, such as if they are strangulated by their own umbilical cord while in the womb. There are cases, however, were medical negligence plays a direct role in the child coming down with cerebral palsy and, in those cases, it may be advisable for you to contact an attorney to see if they can help you prepare a lawsuit. A Texas cerebral palsy lawyer will only be able to help you for a certain amount of time after your child is born, so be sure to contact one quickly if you suspect that negligence was an issue.

As the child gets older, the condition will generally become more noticeable. For example, when they attempt to walk, it will generally become apparent that they have significantly more difficulty coordinating their muscles and controlling their movements than do other children. It will also become more apparent that they have trouble learning to speak and, in many cases, people with cerebral palsy have substantial hearing deficiencies that may also be issues for them, particularly in school.

Cognitive disabilities may become apparent immediately or they may take a while to manifest. Even children who have cerebral palsy but who are generally free of mental impairments still do have some cognitive difficulties. For example, they may be socially very graceful and have a good time of it in school but still may have issues with memory or in other specific areas where they need a bit of extra attention.

There are so many treatments available for this condition that there's no reason to think that your child cannot be helped substantially. If your child has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, there are also plenty of groups that help parents in this situation by giving them good information and, in some cases, by providing venues where they can meet with other parents to get emotional support.
