Cerebral Palsy Lawsuit | Cerebral Palsy and Economics

People who suffer from significant disabilities oftentimes qualify for assistance programs that can help them with the expenses of life. Quite often, however, the amount of money that these assistance programs pay out is very minimal and will only cover the basics. Depending on how much money the individual affected needs for treatments, they may end up having to compromise on quite a few of the basics of life just to get by. If they need very sophisticated care, it may be extremely difficult for them to get competent, compassionate care.

Severe cases of cerebral palsy have significant economic effects because of the way this disorder affects the individuals who suffer with it. Its most notable effect is on mobility and muscle control. Individuals who have severe cases of cerebral palsy are oftentimes wheelchair-bound and cannot fend for themselves. This means that they will need a full-time caregiver to make sure that they have adequate hygiene, nutrition and that their living space is maintained as needed. This, obviously, can be a very expensive proposition.

Individuals with less severe cases of cerebral palsy will oftentimes need treatments to alleviate the more severe symptoms. For example, sufferers sometimes endure painful and debilitating muscle spasms, even if they are normally able to walk and perform other tasks that involve controlling the muscles. Most of the time, medication is required to control the spasms and, at the very least, they will be unable to work or do much of anything else when they are having an episode.

Assistive Devices

Assistive devices for walking and to help with sensory perception are very expensive, as well. For many people with cerebral palsy, they are necessities. Cerebral palsy oftentimes affects the individual's ability to hear and to see, which means that they will need assistive devices for these issues. Walking is one of the most common difficulties that cerebral palsy sufferers endure, and wheelchairs and crutches can be very expensive.

If medical negligence was a factor in someone developing cerebral palsy, people sometimes choose to file a cerebral palsy lawsuit. A Texas cerebral palsy attorney can sit down with you and help you determine whether or not your particular case of cerebral palsy, or your child’s, meets the criteria to file a lawsuit to seek compensation from the physician, healthcare provider or other individual that was negligent in a way that resulted in this particular injury.
