Coping With Brain Injury: What To Know and Do

How to Cope With Brain Injury

The Brain Injury Association of America estimates nearly 1.4 millionbrain individuals will suffer from brain injury. This personal injury is the result of a sudden yet violent blow to the head. This can lead to bruises to the brain, torn nerves, and internal bleeding. Some of the more common causes of brain injury are sudden falls, vehicle accidents, blows to the head from a blunt object, and war injuries suffered during active duty.

The Signs of Brain Injury

Brain injury can vary from mild to severe cases. Since the brain controls body movements, thoughts, and senses, brain injury can have a wide range of effects to a human being. Immediately, bruising and swelling can occur. Once this personal injury swells to a certain point, pressure to the skull begins to form. Other signs include:

·         Unconsciousness or amnesia

·         Headaches, convulsions, or seizures

·         Dizziness or loss of coordination and sensory actions

·         Slurred speech, nausea, or mood changes

·         Loss of memory, appetite, or interest in activities

What to do if you Experience a Brain Injury

A brain injury, whether mild or severe, is an emergency. Immediate care should be given to ensure optimum treatment. Common tests doctors use include:

·         Glasgow Coma Scale- a 15-point test that checks your ability to function properly

·         CT Scans - Used to visualize fractures and uncover hemorrhages, blood clots, contusions, and brain tissue swelling

·         MRIs - Usually performed after CT Scans and uses powerful magnet and radio waves to record images of the brain
