Dallas Nursing Home Abuse Lawyers | Homecare and Senior Abuse
For many elderly people, homecare is one of the best situations possible. It allows them to keep a great deal of their independence, it allows them to remain in their own home and prevents them from having to spend the latter years of their life in a nursing home. In some cases, however, homecare can become a situation where senior abuse becomes a real problem.
Abusive individuals sometimes engage in abusive behavior simply out of sadism. In many cases, however, there is another reason that they resort to abusive behavior. For example, they may become aware that the person they take care of has a great deal of money squirreled away and they may be looking for a way to intimidate them out of it. They may try to humiliate, intimidate or isolate the individual in a way that makes them more psychologically malleable and, thus, more easily exploited for their money and other resources. One of the things to watch out for is a homecare worker who suddenly seems to have a lot more money than they did when they first showed up on the job. Thieves are oftentimes defeated by their own propensities to live extravagant lifestyles once they get a little bit of money out of someone vulnerable enough to rob.
Reporting elder abuse in a homecare situation is sometimes more difficult because the elder themselves may wish to avoid the situation altogether. They may be worried that, if the homecare situation doesn't work out for any reason, that they’ll be sent off to a nursing home. Make sure that your loved one understands that they will not be held responsible for the abuse in any way. They also need to understand that there's nothing to be embarrassed about and, if anybody deserves to be embarrassed, it’s the abuser themselves.
If you're having a very hard time finding out if there's something going on with your loved one, but strongly suspect that there is, consult with their physician. In many cases, you can let the physician know that something suspicious appears to be going on and that physician will make extra time to examine the elder for signs of abuse. Sometimes this is the only way to establish that it's going on and it's the only way to start the process of ending it for good and of finding another healthcare provider.
