Fort Worth Police Department Fires Six Officers Amid FBI Investigation
When you hear about your local police department you hope to hear about their bravery. You want to hear about them protecting and serving the community. Unfortunately, much of the news that has come out of the Fort Worth Police Department hasn't been very encouraging lately.
The latest story involves the firing of six police officers because of an alleged scheme that had officers falsifying traffic documents in order to receive payment for overtime that they had never worked.
Although they have not yet been charged with anything, they have been suspended indefinitely which is the equivalent of termination. Because some of the overtime was paid using federal grant money, the FBI joined the investigation in April.
Coming on the heels of the Jesus Cisneros sentencing, his is just another in a long history of unprofessional and sometime criminal activity within the ranks of the Fort Worth PD. Add to these stories the several officers who have been arrested for driving under the influence in the past few years, and one begins to question just what is exactly going on within the Fort Worth PD.
Why is this culture of irresponsibility allowed to continue?
Of all the people in society, law enforcement should be the last group you expect to see breaking laws and disregarding the rules of society. Regrettably, it has become commonplace in Fort Worth.
Hopefully this will be the last straw that brings a true change in culture. Fort Worth Police Chief Jim Halstead has taken the first step by firing these officers. The next is in the hands of the court system which will now decide what actions to take against this blatant disregard for the law and for the tax payers that fund these officers' salaries.
