Parents who suspect that their children may be abused at daycare have several resources available to them to help them understand some of the most common signs of abuse. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services offers information for parents that may help them to recognize some of the signs of abuse in daycare or other settings. If you see the signs of abuse, you may want to consider taking further action.
Physical Abuse
According to the agency's literature, there are quite a few signs of physical abuse that parents may want to keep an eye out for if they suspect that abuse is going on. Physical injuries, of course, are some of the most obvious signs of abuse. The types of injuries you'll want to keep an eye out for are ones that seem unusual. For example, a child having a small bruise on their leg or arm from play is not all that unusual. However, if those bruises are frequent and severe or they are in odd patterns, it may indicate that something is going on. Your parental instincts will play a big role in making this determination.
Sometimes, abusers are very adept at hiding the signs. If your child seems to be experiencing pain but you cannot see any obvious physical reason for it, you may want to investigate the matter further. Taking them to a doctor may be a good idea. Children who are pulled around by their arms roughly sometimes suffer dislocated shoulders and other injuries because of the amount of force employed.
Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse is one of the worst possible situations for children and parents. Aside from the physical signs of being sexual abuse, there are some more subtle signs that you can watch out for.
One of the things you'll want to keep an eye out for is the child having an age inappropriate knowledge of sexual behavior. They may also imitate the sexual abuse that they have become familiar with on other children. These types of behavior are not normal and they should be considered cause for further investigation.
If your child was the victim of physical or sexual abuse at a daycare facility, consider contacting a daycare abuse attorney about the matter. There are limitations on how long you have to file a lawsuit in these cases and you'll want to speak to an attorney right away to see how much time you have.
