Doctor With History Of Malpractice Practicing Brain Surgery In Corpus Christi
When faced with tough punishments and restrictions by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, a Minnesota doctor didn’t stop practicing medicine – he simply moved to Texas and started seeing patients with absolutely no restrictions. In 2010, brain surgeon Stefan Konasiewicz was sanctioned after four different incidents in which patients were allegedly harmed by the doctor. The medical board in his state required him to observed and reviewed quarterly in order to keep a close eye on his interactions with patients and how he conducts surgery. However, by the time the man had been officially sanctioned, he had already relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he could continue to practice medicine without observations or reviews.
While the Texas Medical Board usually reviews any history of medical malpractice when doctors begin to practice in the state, Konasiewics’ record does not contain any specific medical malpractice cases even though they do exist. In fact, a Minnesota newspaper discovered five different medical malpractice settlements totaling $3.2 million in the past five years. What’s the issue? State officials say that it is likely that the Texas Medical Board is simply not aware of the doctor’s troubling medical malpractice history.
Currently, Konasiewicz has brain surgery patients at an office in Corpus Christi and has privileges in four area hospitals.
