An East Texas man was killed in a traffic accident in Longview this week as he was attempting to assist an injured police officer who had crashed minutes earlier.

According to police, 32-year-old Trent Hepler was driving near Estes Parkway in Longview when he observed a DPS trooper lose control of his cruiser and slam into a fence located off the roadway. Hepler parked his car on the shoulder along with several other vehicles, but was hit by an oncoming truck when he tried to cross the road to assist the officer. The crane truck and attached trailer struck him after that vehicle, too, seemed to lose control.

Hepler leaves behind a wife and three children. His wife told reporters that her husband left doing what he did best – helping others. Trent’s father Ron Hepler also commented on his son’s goodness and sense of right.

DPS Trooper David Rice received minor injuries in the car accident.
