Nursing Home Neglect
Neglect in nursing homes is one of the most insidious forms of senior abuse. While it might seem like it's not quite as dangerous as other forms of abuse, such as physical or sexual abuse, it poses a genuine risk to the life of the senior that is the victim of it. Many senior citizens have a hard time getting out of bed and, when they're left in a situation where they don't get adequate exercise and adequate hygiene, their health can quickly deteriorate. Here are some of the signs you'll want to keep an eye out for.
Frequent Infections
Healthcare facilities should always be very clean, obviously. While it is somewhat predictable for people who are in poor health to come down with infections more often than do people who are in the prime of their lives, they shouldn't be coming down with infections constantly. One of the ways that people tend to come down with infections is when they don't receive adequate medical care and when they are in a position where they cannot get themselves adequate medical care on their own. For example, if wound dressings aren't changed regularly and if they are in bed for too long of stretches, they can often end up developing infections.
Unhygienic Conditions
In some cases, you may notice that the nursing home just doesn't seem very clean. Everybody in the nursing home should be bathed regularly and nobody should seem like they're going too long without attention being paid to their hygiene. In some cases, you may notice this in terms of depression, as well, as grooming is a basic part of human dignity.
Dirty Clothes
A nursing home facility should provide regular laundry services or they should have a laundry on site. If you start to notice that your loved one's clothing or their bed clothing seems stained or if they aren't changed regularly, you may have a problem. This can lead to serious health implications. Regular hygiene is a big part of making sure that people who are vulnerable to various illnesses are in the best condition to fight them off.
Keeping elderly people in conditions that put them at risk is a form of negligence. If your loved one is in this situation, you may want to consider contacting an attorney about the matter. If that negligence causes them to come to harm, in attorney may be able to file a lawsuit for compensation.
