Signs of Cerebral Palsy

The signs of a cerebral palsy birth injury can be very hard to detect. Many of them involve slowness, spasms and improper function of the muscles. In infants, this can be very hard to see, simply because the baby is obviously incapable of describing what’s hurting them. This means that the worst of these symptoms oftentimes go unnoticed for weeks, sometimes months and, in some cases, even years after birth. The common forms of cerebral palsy offer some clarification regarding how these symptoms manifest.

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

Ataxic cerebral palsy affects around 10% of the total population who suffer the disorder. In this particular case, the symptoms are seen mainly when the sufferer is walking. This may mean that their stride is uneven and shaky. They may also have abnormally poor balance all around. Of course, this won’t be obvious when the child is a newborn and it may take months or years before the worst damage is noticed.

Spastic Diplegia

This disorder is the most common form of CP. It involves a persistent stiffness in both the arms and the legs. Oftentimes, the effects are noticeable and severe enough to cause lifelong problems for the affected individual. Again, this may take weeks or months to be noticeable.

Athetoid Cerebral Palsy

In this disorder, the entire body suffers from the same muscle issues that affect the arms and legs in other incarnations of cerebral palsy. This affects more people than Ataxic CP, but far fewer than are affected by Spastic Diplegia.

While any of these disorders may be the result of an injury suffered during the birthing process, it takes expertise to establish that this is the case. Your cerebral palsy attorney will investigate the circumstances of the birth and rely on experts to guide the case in terms of establishing the evidence.

You may or may not have to go to court to settle your cerebral palsy claim. Because this disorder does occur naturally, it has to be established that there was some fault to be laid at the feet of the medical professionals present at the time of birth. If you believe that this is the case, contacting an attorney is the best way to start. Free consultations are frequently offered for these types of cases, which ensures that you don’t have to pay out of pocket to have your case reviewed.
