New Treatments for Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy , which affects roughly 800,000 people around the country, does not have a cure – and in many cases, therapies and medications only serve to make patients more comfortable. However, a new study from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital shows that intensive and aggressive physical therapy programs helped nine out of ten children suffering from the condition.

Researchers helped children learn to walk more effectively using a device called LiteGait, which allows children with spastic muscles to go through physical therapy without as much pain. The device takes much of the weight off of the children’s legs and allows them to develop stronger muscles and muscle memory. In eight weeks of heavy therapy, the vast majority of cerebral palsy subjects were more confident, more independent, and more mobile. Traditional therapy sessions for children with cerebral palsy often only take place once a week.

Researchers and doctors also say that intensive LiteGait therapy could help those who have suffered serious brain injuries.
