Nursing Home Abuse Attorney | Nursing Home Shutdown Details Common Problems

Nursing Home Shutdown Details Common Problems

Nursing homes across the nation struggle with issues that sometimes result in compromised patient care and other problems. Recently, an Alabama nursing home was shut down due to several different types of violations. Among the complaints against the Alabama nursing home was a lack of sufficient fire protection equipment. While most family members' concerns about their loved ones who live in nursing homes likely center around medical care, there are other concerns that need to be taken into consideration, as well.

Safe Facilities

Nursing home abuseOne of the most important things to take into consideration is whether or not the facility is actually safe. As in the case of the Alabama facility, fire protection equipment needs to be in place to ensure that residents are not put in severe danger due to fires and related disasters. Nursing homes have a uniquely difficult situation in that many of the residents are hard to move or, in some cases, may not be able to be transported at all without a great deal of equipment going with them. This is why it's so important for nursing homes to have good fire protection plans and good evacuation plans in place. It is never inappropriate to ask the staff at a nursing home you're considering for your loved one whether they have such plans. Depending on your state, check for the most common disasters whethers its tornados, earthquakes or hurricanes.

Infections and Cleanliness

In addition to protection from disasters, nursing homes have to provide adequate protection from illnesses. Of course, many of the people in nursing homes are already in a bad situation where their overall health is concerned and, because of that, there needs to be a very detailed plan in place regarding hygiene, infection prevention, blood-borne pathogens and other issues. These programs need to conform to state norms and, if it appears that they do not, they should be reported. It doesn't take a very severe infection to kill somebody who already has a compromised immune system.

Reporting Elder Abuse

Not providing an environment that is up to safety standards is most certainly a form of nursing home abuse. Reporting abuse to state regulatory agencies is imperative. In some cases, where the abuse is criminal, it needs to be reported to the appropriate authorities. Families who are victimized by nursing homes that are incompetent, negligent or generally abusive may wish to contact an attorney about filing a lawsuit. Some families manage to win significant compensation from a jury award or settlement due to having filed such a lawsuit.
