Spot Nursing Home Abuse - Report Quickly
Neglect in nursing homes puts the victims at significant and, potentially, deadly risk. In many cases, people end up suing over nursing home mistreatment because of the tremendous medical expenses that they end up having to pay because of the complications their loved ones suffer. In cases where somebody is in a nursing home but does not receive adequate care, there are some characteristic problems that you may want to keep an eye out for. If you do notice any of these warning signs, don't hesitate to contact the state and inform them of the situation.
Worsening Conditions
People in nursing homes, of course, are usually pretty advanced in age or have very severe medical problems. This doesn't mean that their conditions should be constantly getting worse, however. If your loved one is constantly getting worse and there's no reason you can think of why this is the case, it may be an indication that there is neglect going on at the nursing home.
Psychological Trauma
People who are abused generally do feel traumatized by the experience. People express this in very different ways. Some of them will become very withdrawn and others will become very aggressive and angry. If you see a sudden personality change in a loved one who is being cared for at a nursing home, consider it a warning sign.
Infections and Bed Sores
These are two very common signs of nursing home neglect and abuse. Infections arise because of poor hygiene. Bed sores come about because somebody who is bedridden isn't turned over adequately or isn't helped to get out of bed once in a while so they can move around a bit. Either of these conditions can get very serious very quickly.
Significant Weight Loss
It's not uncommon for people who are being neglected to lose weight at a rapid rate. Older individuals do tend to lose weight rather quickly and, in some cases, this is to be expected. This is by no means always the case, however. Competent nursing home facilities have excellent dietitians and nutritional experts on hand and should be able to provide your loved one with all of their nutritional needs. If they are losing weight constantly, there may be something going on involving neglect or outright abuse.
It's important to intervene right away if you find out that there is some sort of abuse going on in a nursing home environment. Generally speaking, the abuse you're aware of will only be part of all of the abuse that's going on at the facility. Having the state intervene quickly is imperative toward protecting elders.
