Nursing Home Negligence Lawyer | Recognizing Nursing Home Negligence

Nursing home negligence can have horrible effects on elders. In some cases, they won’t be given needed treatments and any conditions they suffer may grow worse. In others, they may be treated incorrectly or overmedicated. Negligence doesn’t mean the same thing as merely ignoring a patient nor does it necessarily mean being incompetent. A fully competent, skilled caregiver may be guilty of negligence if they make mistakes that they can reasonably be expected to avoid and if someone suffers as a result of it.

Reporting elder abuse can be difficult. There are situations when you may not be certain that the abuse is even going on. There are signs you can look for that will clue you in.

  • Worsening conditions that should be getting treatment
  • Isolation, withdrawal and depression
  • Bedsores and other injuries that result from stagnation
  • Significant weight loss or gain
  • Disorientation from being overmedicated

In some cases, caregivers may overmedicate a person simply to make them easier to deal with. This is a very common form of senior abuse. Most seniors take several medications on a daily basis. This makes it easy for those in charge of doling out the medications to give too much of a sedative or other tranquillizer, which is sometimes a tactic used by individuals who would rather just ignore their patients.elder abuse

Nursing home neglect sometimes exacts a heavy psychological toll on elders. Socialization is a major component of feeling healthy and engaged. Seniors who are isolated from their friends and family oftentimes develop metal health issues, as would anyone in the same situation. In these cases, the nursing home may not be upholding their duty to make sure that the people who live there are adequately provided with things to stimulate them and to keep them active, a major component of healthcare.

If you suspect nursing home abuse or neglect, you may want to contact an attorney. They can determine if you have a case against the institution. If you have a case, there may be a large settlement or jury award available through a lawsuit. The money received may provide a way to help recover from the abuse and to place your elder in a better facility that takes care of its patients. In some situations, the abuse may be physical. It’s important that seniors are not left in homes where this is the case, as there is real danger to life and limb.
