This week, as part of
World Elder Abuse Awareness Week, Midland was host to the Prevention of Elder Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation Conference, which was held at the CEED Building and organized by St. Joseph's Home Health Care and Adult Protective Services (APS) among other health and safety advocates.
The main topic of the conference, which discussed elder abuse and elder neglect both inside and outside of Texas nursing homes, was simply awareness. While
child abuse and spousal abuse are common topics that most are familiar with, many do not know the extent to which seniors often undergo harm do to abuse and neglect in what should be their golden years. More specifically, speakers went over the different forms of elder abuse, such as
verbal abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, and financial abuse. How can you help the fight against
elder abuse? Teach what you have learned about warning signs and prevention to others, and look after the wellbeing of the seniors in your own life.
