Statistics on Swimming Pool Accidents

Swimming should be thought of as a time of fun and relaxation. Therefore, any time there is an instance of severe injury or even pool deaths as the result of a swimming pool accident it is indeed a very tragic development. Unfortunately, swimming pool accident statistics are prevalent in this day and age, especially as more and more homeowners are building interior and exterior swimming pools.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that there were 3,582 fatal drowning in the United States, which averages out to 10 fatalities a day. Furthermore, one in four of these victims will be under the age of 14 and accidents in swimming pools that are not fatal could result in long-term disabilities due to brain damage.

The CDC offers life-saving advice to all homeowners who choose to install a pool on their property in an attempt to minimize swimming pool accidents.

  • Remove toys from the pool to avoid encouraging children to enter the pool unsupervised.
  • Make a four-sided pool fence that separates the house and yard from the pool. Make sure the fence is at least four feet high, so that it keeps children out.
  • Install security devices to prevent anyone from entering the pool without your direct supervision.

Consumer Affairs adds its own tips on how to minimize the occurrence of swimming pool accidents:

  • Ban drunken guests from entering the pool or walking around the premises
  • Remove the diving board
  • Keep life saving items nearby in case of an emergency
  • Install a pool alarm
  • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Ignoring these tips could result in a premise liability if someone is killed or severely injured from a swimming related injury. Remember, just because someone posts a sign stating that he is not responsible for a pool-related injury does not waive that person of legal liability.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a swimming pool accident and the homeowner isn't accepting premise liability, then you should contact a qualified attorney.
