Survey: Better Communication Could Prevent Texas Medical Malpractice

As lawmakers across Texas debate how best to fix the healthcare system and reduce the number of medical malpractice lawsuits, a new survey may have a surprisingly simple answer to the contentious issue.

The new survey, which was conducted in Austin, Texas, found that a number of medical errors and hospital misunderstandings could be avoided simply through better communication between doctors and patients.

Nine out of ten doctors said that many Texas medical malpractice lawsuits that were later dropped or dismissed could have been prevented altogether if initial communication between the physician and patient would have taken place. At the same time, seven out of ten patients agreed that miscommunication and poor communication by physicians can lead to medical mistakes and possible lawsuit.

Can medical mistakes be reduced simply through improved communication between health care providers and their recipients? While this fix sounds much simpler than full-blown medical malpractice tort reform, it seems that merely taking more time to talk could be one step toward creating a safer hospital environment for Texans. It is certainly not the only change that needs to be made, but it is an important one.
