The Most Common Medical Malpractices Mistakes Made

Diseases Associated with Medical Malpractice

If an injury occurs due to negligence or failure to diagnose on the part of a medical professional, the patient is entitled to damages. The money is granted as a result of the medical malpractice lawsuit filed by the patient. The lawsuits allege injuries due to avoidable circumstances. It is important to note, however, that not all cases qualify for a claim. It is best to consult a medical malpractice attorney who can assess the merits of the case.Reasons that generally lead to a lawsuit are:

• A significant injury is inflicted on a patient due to malpractice.
• Medical care provided to the patient does not match the expected standard.
• Negligence on the part of medical personnel results in direct harm to the patient.

Some diseases that result in patients obtaining medical malpractice damages are:

Breast cancer: Most such cases are a result of misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis. Either the severity of the symptom is not accounted for or cancerous tissue is analyzed as a benign cyst. An incorrect diagnosis means that the condition worsens over time. This may also make the cancer chronic and impossible to cure.

Lung cancer:
Medical malpractice accounting for lung cancer is similar to breast cancer. If the medical professional makes an incorrect judgment or there is a delay in diagnosis, the condition may worsen. This can also result in the death of the patient.

Colon cancer:
Often, colon cancer cases are assumed to be irritable bowel syndrome. The methods employed to diagnose the condition are not able to discover the cancer. There are also cases when the disease is discovered but not diagnosed or reported. This causes poor patient outcome and the consequences are fatal.

Heart attacks:
In these cases, if the chest pain is not intense or if the patient is young, the heart attack goes unnoticed. Doctors also mistake it for heartburn or stomach pain. A delay in appropriate treatment can deteriorate the condition resulting in severe consequences.

Appendicitis:
Malpractice leading to aggravated appendicitis happens because there are a number of other reasons for abdominal pain. This is very common in infants and young children.

Again, the outcomes of a misdiagnosis are acute and tragic. More often than not, medical malpractice is a result of misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, cases that were not reported or a delay in the treatment. This negligence further complicates and aggravates the condition and can even cause death. Irrespective of the disease, the end result is often so cruel that a large monetary settlement can be reached.
