What To Do If You See a Wrong Way Driver

This week, a man was sentenced to ten years probation after causing a car accident that killed a Colorado Springs couple and left their two young daughters without parents.

The man, who apologized for the accident, had been driving the wrong way down a highway and was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
What should you do if you see a wrong-way driver on a Texas highway or interstate?

  • Slow down and go to the shoulder. Act as though there is an approaching emergency vehicle. If there is not a shoulder, pull as far as you can away from the vehicle. Do not slam on your brakes if there is a vehicle directly behind you and do not swerve off of the road altogether or into other lanes, if possible.
  • Honk your horn, flash your lights, and put on your hazards. You may be able to make the driver aware that they are traveling in the wrong direction. You may also be able to warn other drivers that a hazard is ahead.
  • Call 911 immediately. A shocking number of wrong-way highway accidents end in serious injury and death. Calling an emergency number as soon as possible could save a life.

Wrong-way accidents lead to serious injuries and deaths in Texas every year. If you or a loved one has been harmed in a car accident that was not your fault, you deserve compensation for your losses.
