When Pets Attack – Understanding Pet Liability
Pets are faithful companions, guardians, best friends, sounding boards, therapists and so many other wonderful things, but on the negative side they can also be a liability for example if your dog bites someone. Most pet owners do not consider this aspect of having a pet or that there are even dog bite laws in existence. Pet owners must also be aware that their responsibility includes any harm their pet causes anyone else. If your pet attacks someone else, it can become a premise liability issue and might need a dog bit lawyer to oversee the case.
Pets are not always within their owner's sight. They can be in the yard, playing at a park or just out exploring the neighborhood. Sometimes a pet owner is not even witness to something like a dog bite accident and has to rely on the information of the victim and any possible witnesses.
This information does not always tell the whole story. The victim of the attack may not disclose the details that preceded the assault. Unfortunately for the pet owner, even in such a case, the pet liability still often lies with the owner. There are more clear-cut circumstances too though, where appropriate precautions were obviously not taken such as supervision with others, especially when children are involved with the animal, and proper fencing or other boundaries.
