5 Tips for Traveling at Night

Travelling at night can be very enjoyable. The roads are calmer, you don't have to deal with the heat of the day and it's very relaxing, in many regards. If you're taking a long drive at night or if you're leaving on a long trip after sundown, keep the following in mind so that you stay as safe as possible.

1: Time Your Headlights

In order to drive safely, you'll need to make sure that you're driving at a speed that gives you time to react to whatever comes into the range of your headlights before you hit it. Modern headlights are very powerful and it's easy to overestimate how far ahead you can actually see. Time how long it takes for a physical feature, such as a line on the road, to go from the beginning of the area your headlights illuminate to the point where you'd hit it if it were an obstruction. You should have at least 2 seconds to react.

2: People with Brights

If someone comes at you with their brights on, don't flash your brights at them. You might blind them and cause a collision. Slow down and pay attention to the line on the right side of the road so you're not staring directly into their headlights.

3: Clean Your Windshield Before Leaving

When you're on a road with no streetlights and someone's lights come through your windshield, they'll illuminate every streak and every bit of grime on your windshield, compromising your vision. It can be distracting enough to make it impossible to drive, so clean up the car before you leave.

4: Slow Down

If you're driving in an unfamiliar area at night, don't be afraid to slow down a bit. It can be hard to see corners coming up before you're right on top of them. Be particularly wary in areas where you see animal crossing signs posted.

Accident Attorney5: Pull Over When You're Tired

Coffee will not keep you awake if you're exhausted. If you feel like you're going to fall asleep, it's better to pull over anywhere you can and to sleep until you're refreshed. Drowsy drivers are every bit as dangerous as drunk drivers.

If you're hit by someone driving when they're tired or being otherwise negligent, contact an auto accident attorney. An accident attorney can help you to determine whether or not it's worth it for you to file a lawsuit to seek compensation.
