Understanding Cerebral Palsy and Birth Injuries

Cerebral palsy is a condition that occurs due to an infant’s brain being starved of oxygen. The results are the same as one would expect in an adult: irreversible brain damage. Cerebral palsy damage affects control of the muscles, hearing, speech and causes a host of other problems for the affected. There are several ways that this disorder manifests. Not all of them affect the entire body, though they all will result in considerable challenges for your child. Some cases are far more severe than others.cerebral palsy attorney

A common form of cerebral palsy is spastic dysplasia. This disorder causes stiffness in the limbs. It can manifest as trouble walking and performing fine motor tasks with the hands. A full 70 percent of people who suffer from cerebral palsy suffer from this exact incarnation of this disorder. Cerebral palsy in infants, because they’re not expected to move around much at all, is sometimes hard to detect. In some cases, it may actually be years before the disorder is even recognized. The speech and hearing difficulties can result in the child having a hard time in school, as well.

Ataxic cerebral palsy is another form of this disorder, but only affects approximately 10 percent of those who suffer CP. This results in problems with balance and, particularly, it results in a very shaky gait. It’s one of the easier forms to spot in children who are starting to explore the world. Sometimes, this form of cerebral palsy can coexist with others. resulting in the entire range of problems associated with the disease being compounded and with more treatments being necessary. There are some things about cerebral palsy from which you can take heart, however, bad as the situation can be.

Cerebral palsy is not degenerative. The symptoms sometimes do worsen with time, but the disorder itself is more or less static. In some cases, treatment may need to be more intensive over time, however. This treatment can take many forms, but it is never cheap. Your child will require such treatment throughout their life. If you’re in a situation where you believe your child’s condition was caused by birth injury that could have been avoided, call an attorney. They may be able to file a claim that could win you a jury award or a settlement, which could mean a lot of relief when planning for the future.
