If you’re shopping around for attorneys to represent you due to a car accident, you’re probably well aware that many of them offer a free car accident lawsuit evaluation. If you’re wondering why they offer this for free and you’re wondering what to expect when you go, here is a primer.

The attorneys who offer these free consultations generally work on a contingency basis. They won’t know whether or not they’ll want to represent you until they hear what happened to you. Of course, this is true of any attorney, but is particularly true of attorneys who work under these arrangements. Because they only get paid for their legal services if they win your claim, they want to make certain that you have the best possible chance of actually winning.

In order to do this, they need to sit down with you and speak with you. They may need to follow up with an investigation after having met with you, as well. If they believe your claim is worth taking, they’ll investigate the matter further.

What They Can Do

Attorneys who take these kinds of cases are set up to investigate them and to determine what happened, even under the most confusing circumstances. They’ll be able to determine whether or not they believe that the other driver, other drivers or some other entity was negligent and caused you to come to harm because of that. This will be part of the investigation following your legal evaluation.

Attorneys can negotiate settlements with the other people involved or they can argue your claim in court. You don’t need to look for separate attorneys to handle either. An attorney can also help you deal with an insurance company. In the course of your evaluation, it may become apparent to the attorney that the insurance company should really be picking up part of the expenses related to your accident and they may recommend going after them.

This is part of what you learn at the legal evaluation. It’s important to keep this in mind, because, if you’re not sure whether or not you should sue or who you should sue, the attorney can help you with this. You don’t have to go to a legal evaluation with a clear idea of who’s responsible. Attorneys do this for a living, and they can investigate the matter and figure out who you should go after.

If you’re debating whether or not to sue, getting a legal evaluation is something you should do very quickly.
