If You are Rear Ended, Does Your Seat Have Your Back?

The answer is more than likely no. Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed as the result of a rear end collision and safety critics believe that many of these injuries and deaths could have been prevented by simply requiring stronger car seats. dallas car crash attorney

In Los Angeles, there is one law firm that is standing up to this problem and meeting it head on. Bisnar | Chase is a personal injury firm that for years has fought for the rights of consumers and held automobile manufacturers and other industries responsible for their defective and dangerous products.

"I would say that Ninety-five plus percent of all vehicles on the road, which is tens of millions all have this defect in it," says attorney Brian Chase in a news story on dangerous car seats by KTTV Fox 11 in Los Angeles. "The problem is that we have got a watered down federal standard."

Sadly, these dangerous, flimsy car seats actually do adhere to government regulations. The requirements as laid out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's regulation 207 would allow for a seat as flimsy as an aluminum lawn chair to be deemed safe enough for automobiles. Alarmingly, this is basically what many automobiles have in them, glorified metal beach chairs with some foam padding and fabric or leather covering.

Rebecca Romine, a client of Chase, is a victim of these weak regulations. She was taking her boyfriend home from work when her car was rear ended by a pickup truck. While the wreck sent the driver of the truck forward into his airbag, she was thrown backwards, due to her seat which collapsed backwards. When her seat collapsed back, her neck was broken in several places. She will more than likely never walk again.

Another client of Chase's is Stephanie Collins, whose seat collapsed backwards during a rear end collision, throwing her into her 9-year-old daughter. Her daughter's injuries would cut short her precious young life, all because of an inexplicably weak car seat.

Chase has not only been able to recreate the crash, showing that the seats were too weak to withstand the collision, but has also shown proof that the government's own tests showed the same result.

The most unfathomable aspect of this is that the estimated cost to remedy this problem is only five or six dollars per seat. That seems like a relatively small price to pay for consumer safety, especially to grief stricken individuals like Collins and Romine.

Stories like this are precisely the reason why automobile manufacturers must be held responsible when they fail to do their part to ensure the safety of their consumers. If you feel that you have been injured or have lost a loved one due to a defective car seat, then contact the Rasansky Law Firm and speak with a product liability lawyer attorney. Nothing can ever be done to bring back Romine's ability to walk and have a normal life, or bring back Collins' daughter, but something can be done to ensure that nobody has to go through the same situation due to weak or flimsy car seats.
