Bisphosphonate Drugs and Osteonecrosis

Osteonecrosis is a condition where bone tissue gradually dies. It can occur for many reasons, but one of the most distressing reasons that people are showing up with this condition appears to be connected to bisphosphonate drugs. These drugs are typically prescribed to women who are suffering from osteoporosis. They include brand names such as Fosamax.

Unsafe DrugsWhat is Osteonecrosis?

Osteonecrosis – specifically, osteonecrosis of the jaw, is the disorder associated with bisphosphonate drugs. This can be an exceedingly painful condition. What is causing a great deal of controversy among doctors and patients is whether the risk of causing osteonecrosis is worth the potential benefits of prescribing these drugs. Even women with osteoporosis may not have a significant chance of enduring a bone fracture during any given year. If the risk of suffering some of the most disturbing side effects of these drugs is high enough, it may negate the benefits of prescribing them at all.

Not Disclosed

If you're considering bringing a lawsuit against a manufacturer because you took a bisphosphonate drug and suffered osteonecrosis or another side effect that was not disclosed to you, the nondisclosure part of that scenario is the most important element for your legal case. The reason is that adults can, and often times do, accept the risk of certain side effects to get the benefits of specific drugs. For example, ibuprofen is known to increase the risk of certain stomach problems but, because of its beneficial effects, many people choose to use it every day. It's up to the consumer to inform themselves about the side effects of the drug that they are taking and, if they accept that risk, then it is their responsibility.

Problems for drug manufacturers arise when they fail to disclose the potential side effects of the drug or when a drug is found to have certain side effects that were not known before it was put on the market. In addition to drugs such as bisphosphonate pharmaceuticals, other drugs have been the subjects of lawsuits because of similar circumstances. For example, some drugs that work directly on the brain have been associated with a higher incidence of suicide and, in some cases, homicide and this has led to lawsuits.

If you've been treated with bisphosphonate drugs and you believe that these unsafe drugs have resulted in you enduring real financial or physical suffering, contact a defective product attorney to see if you can file a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
