A Great Time to Ride - Tips for Safe Summer Motorcycle Riding

The summer months mean that many people will be out on their motorcycles. For some people, this will be their first season. Here are some things you can do to make sure that your time on your bike is as enjoyable and as safe as possible.

Take a Class

Consider taking a class from an organization such as the Motorcycle Rider's Safety Foundation. There are some significant advantages to this. For starters, it means that your motorcycle endorsement will carry over to any other state, which is not true if you just take a regular state test. You'll also be a much better rider—and a much better car driver—after you graduate.

Leather Isn't Just Fashion

On a bike, one of the biggest risks of injury is hitting the road at speed and getting your flesh torn off. These injuries take a long time to heal and are as painful, and sometimes more painful, than a broken bone. Leather can take a lot of abrasive force and this is why it's popular with motorcycle riders. Get good gear. There are also synthetics that, while they're not quite as sturdy as leather, do provide good protection and have the advantage of being a lot cooler in the summer heat.

Make sure you wear a helmet, even if you're in a state where it isn't required. Ask any dentist and they'll tell you that the vast majority of oral surgeries they have to do to repair damage from motorcycle wrecks are done on people that weren't wearing a full-face helmet when they crashed. Motorcycle helmets also provide you with protection against rocks that get kicked up by vehicles. If one of these hits you in the face, it may well dismount you or cause you to lose a few teeth.

Colors

Consider wearing bright colors when you ride. If you have a lot of dark riding gear, you can get one of the safety vests that highway workers wear and throw it over your gear. This is a great way to help drivers see you when you're on the road.

Most motorcycle accidents that involve crashes with cars happen because the driver doesn't see the bike. This can be construed as negligence. If you have been injured on your bike, a consultation with a motor vehicle accident lawyer may be in order. A car accident lawyer will also work with motorcycle crash victims to seek compensation.
