Can Toys Be Dangerous for Children?

Nothing is better than the sight of children enjoying toys. Unfortunately, there are many dangerous toys sold that could potentially harm little ones and have not passed the basic tests for toy safety or product liability.

How Dangerous Toy Incidents Happen
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is wholly responsible for testing toys, child toy saftey and toy recalls. However, it does not test toys until a complaint is made. This means there may be thousands of toys children play with that are considered dangerous toys. In a report posted by the CPSC, riding toys and small toy balls account for most dangerous toy deaths. In 2007 alone, over 232,000 injuries were the result of children playing with dangerous toys. Most of these injuries were lacerations, contusions and abrasions to the head and face.

How Dangerous Toys Harm Children
In an article by Cincinnati Children's, choking is the leading cause of dangerous toy deaths. Children can choke from little toy balls, latex balloons and dice from board games. Other injuries associated with dangerous toys include burns, poisoning, drowning and strangulation. Sadly, many of these injuries occur in or around the home. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists the most dangerous toys.

Where Dangerous Toys Come From
Although there is no specific place where dangerous toys are purchased, there are some countries that have the most toys recalled. CNNMoney.com reported that Mattel issued a global recall of over 1.5 million toys that were made in China. These dangerous toys were recalled due to the toy's paint containing too much lead and are subject to product liability laws.

There were also reports of recalled dangerous toys containing tiny magnets that were subject to fall out of the toys. These small magnets measured around an eighth of an inch in diameter. If a child swallowed more than two of these magnets, the magnets could attract to one another and cause fatal injuries. There were over 80 different dangerous toys in question including die-cast toy cars as well as Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street toys.
