Is Your Child's Daycare Licensed?
Sometimes, it’s tempting to save a bit of money by buying goods and services from friends or from individuals who are doing work normally done by a large company. As an example, some people buy daycare services from individuals who work out of their homes and who don’t follow state licensing requirements. These may be friends of the family who watch other people’s kids or they may even be people who work below the radar. There are very good reasons that you should choose only licensed facilities; abuse in daycare chief among them.
When most people talk about daycare abuse , they talk about the worst instances, which usually involve physically violent or sexual abuse. These are not the only types of daycare abuse that children suffer with, however, and some of the other forms of abuse can be just as dangerous and damaging.
Sanitation is very important at daycare facilities. As any parent knows, kids tend to get dirty when they’re out playing. At a licensed facility, there are specific standards that have to be maintained where the hygiene of the facility and of the children is concerned. At an unlicensed facility, this will be up to the individual running it. If they’re watching the children of three clients and there isn’t a staff at their facility, they may well not be able to keep the place clean enough to be safe.
In some cases, abuse is synonymous with neglect. In some daycare facilities, too many children are taken on for the staff, resulting in some of the children being neglected during their stay. This can lead to a host of problems. The children may end up hurting themselves because of being unsupervised or they may end up simply feeling unwanted and uncared for, which can be psychologically very difficult. When children don’t have a source of guidance and discipline around, the more aggressive children may well start bullying the less aggressive ones, leading to the kinds of psychological scars that last a lifetime.
There is a certain charm to supporting a small businessperson and there are some good small facilities out there. Neither of these things makes it acceptable to hire an unlicensed daycare provider, however. If your child has been victimized by such a provider, or a licensed one, you may want to contact an attorney to see if you have an option to sue.
