If you’re hesitating, even though you have suspicions that daycare abuse is going on, you’re just being sensible. There were numerous cases from the 1980s and 1990s where a mass hysteria regarding “Satanic Ritual Abuse” gripped the nation. Many daycare workers who’d done nothing wrong lost their jobs, and their reputations, over what amounted to nonsense. However, there are very real and very disturbing cases of daycare abuse that go on every day. You shouldn’t let worries about being hysterical deter you from investigating further. If you’re very worried, you should remove your child from the facility immediately.

If you’re suspicious, consider talking to other parents. Don’t immediately start accusing the facility of anything. People tend to answer questions in a way they think will make you happy and, if you’re venting suspicious, they may well confirm them out of social pressure. You need the truth. Ask about how their children like the facility. Ask how long they’ve been using the facility. There are plenty of questions that are seemingly-innocuous but that may give you some insight. You’ll want to take a hard look at the facility, as well.
Take a casual walk around. Are there places where children could be isolated without other staff or children knowing? This is a warning sign. Is there a sign-in sheet at the front desk and is that desk staffed at all times? If not, consider it a red flag. How about the other staff? Does unlicensed staff have access to the children without being supervised? Is the entire staff background checked? These are questions you should answer before you hire a daycare facility, but answering them late is better than not answering them at all. Your child may be the best indicator.
Daycare negligence oftentimes shows its effects most noticeably in your children. If something seems wrong with your child after having gone to the daycare facility, that should be cause for concern. Perhaps they’re only being bullied by another child, but the situation could be much worse. Remember to constantly remind your child that they don’t have to keep secrets for anyone. The more comfortable your child is talking to you, the more likely that they’ll open up about being abused, if that’s what’s going on. If you are sure that something is wrong at the facility, remember that child protective services is only a phone call away.
