Is Your Baby Safe In Its Crib, Sling, And Stroller?
We put a great deal of time and energy into protecting our children from harm and danger. We also put a great deal of time and energy into ensuring that we make the best home purchases for our newborns and infants, including a crib, a baby sling, and a stroller. However, even though we often assume that what we buy in stores is safe for our children, massive recalls show that a number of infant products and baby furniture could be unsafe and even deadly.
Here are just a few recent examples:
• In the first months of 2010, both Graco and Maclaren recalled millions of strollers after they say the folding products amputated the fingers of a dozen children and caused serious lacerations in many others. • Multiple recalls of drop-side cribs have taken place in the last year – many involving some of the biggest names in baby furniture manufacturing. This recall also came after a number of babies fall through the side of the cribs and suffocated. • A baby sling company in Austin, Texas, recently joined a number of other baby sling companies in recalling their products. Reports say that baby slings have led the deaths of 14 infants in the past two decades.
How can you protect your baby from defective infant products? First and foremost, keep up to date about the most recent baby product recalls and warnings to make sure that the products you have already bought are safe for your children. Next, report any injuries or incidents you have had with baby products at home both to the baby product company and to the CPSC. Finally, always remember that what you buy for your baby in the store may not be 100% safe!
