Maintenance is a big part of avoiding being in a vehicle accident. Not only does it protect you against having something go wrong while you’re driving, it also helps you to deal with situations where other drivers end up causing hazards. Here are some areas of your vehicle to have checked on a regular basis. Your owner’s manual for your car will tell you when you need to have these checks made.

car wreck51: Your Brakes

Vehicle brakes come in two basic typs as far as your driving experience is concerned. Your car will either have anti-lock brakes or it won’t. If it doesn’t, having your brakes lock up when you’re stopping suddenly is a real hazard. You’ll have to learn how to stop without slamming on your brakes and skidding, in which case you have no control over your car.

Your brakes need to be checked whenever they start making noise, in addition to at the regularly scheduled maintenance intervals. If you notice that your brakes aren’t performing as you think they should be, get them checked just to be sure.

2: Your Lights

Make sure you have your lights checked whenever you go in for maintenance. Most of the time, mechanics will do this, but it never hurts to ask. If your vehicle has stock headlights, you may want to consider upgrading. There are excellent lights out there that you can get without spending the large amounts usually charged for the specialty lights you’ll see on the roads these days.

3: Your Windshield

Your windshield washer needs to be filled whenever it gets low. Particularly at night, a dirty windshield can blind you. When other drivers approach you with their lights on and you have a dirty windshield, it’s hard to see anything at all. Make sure your wiper blades are in good repair, as well.

4: Your Tires

Your tires are vital to being safe on the road. Have them rotated at the manufacturer’s recommended schedule and be sure you check the air pressure in them often. Having your tires over or under-inflated can cause wrecks, as it changes the handling characteristics of your vehicle.
