In Home Care Isolation is Elder Abuse
Nursing home abuse lawyers sometimes find themselves arguing cases for people who are cared for in their own homes. In the best case scenarios, at-home care is a wonderful thing. It allows elders to be in their own homes, with their own belongings and in an environment that they control. It’s a liberating thing and some home caregivers are the types of medical professionals that nostalgic stories are often written about. There is an element of isolation to home care, however, that makes it ideal for those who are out there looking for someone to abuse.
In a regular nursing home, there are many staff members on the floor at any given time. While these facilities are sometimes abusive, there is usually enough supervision of the staff to prevent it from becoming a serious issue. In an elder’s home, however, a caregiver has complete and unfettered access to the senior citizen. This means that, if they’re an abuser, they are almost completely free to psychologically or physically abuse the elder, or steal their property.
There are signs that you can look for that tend to indicate abuse. Some of them are physical, such as bruises and abrasions in spots where people are typically shoved and pulled around by bullying types. There are also psychological symptoms. While they’re sometimes hard to see in elders because of other mental issues, these signs should be considered abnormal if the person is otherwise healthy. Watch out for the following:
- Sudden bouts of depression or anger
- Guilt or shame
- An air of keeping secrets
- Conditions that keep worsening despite treatment
- Emotional outbursts
- Crying
- Withdrawal from affection and social interaction
In all reality, despite the complications of age, someone who is fortunate enough to have home care should be rather happy. If something seems to be wrong, don’t dismiss it as the result of your being overprotective or paranoid.
If your loved one has been abused, you may want to call a lawyer for elder abuse help. They may be able to help you put together a lawsuit to get damages from the agency or the individual responsible for the abuse. There is no reason that anyone should be abused, especially an elder. Most of us spend a lot of our lives being looked after by our elders. As time moves on, sometimes we have to become the ones that look out for them.
