Food Poisoning, E. Coli, & Salmonella In Texas

This month, a national FDA recall on romaine lettuce occurred after over 30 people became seriously ill from eating the E. Coli tainted vegetable. Also in May, dozens of people across the country were sickened by bad alfalfa sprouts that were contaminated with the dangerous bacteria salmonella. While American often assume that the food and produce that they buy in their delis, grocery stores, and supermarkets, the number of food recalls involving salmonella and E. Coli are growing every year due to bad plant conditions and shoddy regulations.

Salmonella is a sometimes deadly and hard to kill bacteria that can contaminate all types of foods and that can survive for years without the help of another living organism. When humans become infected with salmonella, it can cause serious digestive issues, including diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. About 40,000 cases of salmonella are reported in the United States each year, though a significant number of cases are probably not reported. While salmonella food poisoning can be a very unpleasant experience for the young and healthy, salmonella can be deadly in children, the elderly, though with poor health, and those who don’t seek medical treatment.

E. Coli is another type of dangerous food poisoning that can cause bloody diarrhea, cramps, vomiting, nausea, fever, watery stools, and dehydration. E. Coli is most often found in undercooked beef, raw milk, or feces. However, E. Coli has also been found in vegetables and other food product recently and can also be passed from person to person in environments like nursing homes and daycare centers.
