Dentists and Medical Malpractice
Even though most of them use Dr. in front of their names, people oftentimes don't really think of their dentists as doctors. In fact, they are medical professionals and they are bound by the same duties to their patients as are any other medical professionals. Just as physician malpractice is a common reason that people file lawsuits, malpractice on the part of dentists is also a reason that people go ahead and press these legal actions.
High Stakes
While the majority of people may not think of their teeth as life and death issues, they are just that, in some cases. In fact, before good dental care was an option, people routinely died of problems with their teeth. For example, an abscess that is not treated and that bursts can cause serious damage and death. Likewise, tooth decay can actually end up causing problems with the heart when the bacteria get into the bloodstream and start to create obstructions to blood flow. Dentists, indeed, do provide a valuable service in the discharge of their duties. They can also do a great deal of harm when they don't live up to the basic standards for any medical professional.
Botched Procedures
When a dentist incorrectly performed the surgery, the consequences can be very severe. Anyone that has had serious dental work knows that there is a lot of pain and suffering involved in dealing with it. When dentists have to go back and correct their own mistakes, the patient oftentimes suffers a great deal. They may also end up having a much diminished quality of life and having a long period of convalescence where they end up losing the money they would normally made working, as well as dealing with the expenses of additional surgeries.
Lawyers
Medical malpractice lawyers can help you with lawsuits against dentists. As is always the case, they will have to sit down with you and determine whether or not you have a legitimate reason to file a claim. There are obviously some significant differences in suing these medical professionals as opposed to suing regular physicians. Patients who are not treated well by the dentists in terms of care that they were given, however, do have the right to pursue a lawsuit. There's no guarantee that it will win, but if the lawyer believes that is strong enough they may advise that you go ahead and take the dentist to court over the malpractice issue.
