Fighting Senior Abuse

Elderly Woman, elder abuse, elder abuse law firmNot all senior abuse cases take place in nursing homes. Home care specialists and assisted living facilities may also be venues for abuse. In some cases, it’s a bit harder to discover abuse that happens to seniors in these situations than it is at a nursing home. One of the hindrances is that the senior may only be examined on a regular basis by one person. In a nursing home setting, there may be several different people with this duty who may find out about the abuse between their various interactions with the person affected.

If someone you know may be being abused, there are some signs that you can watch out for. Some of these signs can result from other situations, however, so it’s important to see the entire picture when assessing the situation. Some of the classic signs of elder abuse include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Withdrawal socially
  • Conditions that do not improve with treatment
  • Missed medications or overmedication
  • Guilt
  • Embarrassment

If there are clear signs that your friend or loved one is being abused, you have to seek elder abuse help. This starts with contacting authorities. There are some abusers out there who are outright sadists and who will torment anyone who’s unable to stick up for themselves. There are also some people working in healthcare with explosive tempers who may injure an elder simply out of impatience or frustration. No matter what the reason behind it, abusive individuals need to be removed from any caregiving position as soon as possible for the good of everyone.

After you’ve spoken with the authorities, it’s time to contact a lawyer. You may be able to get financial compensation for the injuries, pain and suffering your loved one has endured. This money may help them get into a better facility or pay for the services of a competent and compassionate caregiver.

If you or your loved one is enduring one form of senior abuse or another, be sure to do yourself and them a favor and fight back. There’s no reason that anyone should be victimized. When an elder is victimized, insult is added to the injury. A lawyer can help you to figure out if you can pursue a lawsuit. There’s no way to ensure that you’ll win, but it’s worth it to find out if you’re entitled to financial compensation for what your loved one and you have endured.
