The TIME to ACT is NOW.

Senior abuse is a very significant problem today. Elders are oftentimes kept from asking for assistance through fear, intimidation or overmedication. This results in a situation that is nothing short of hellish. A senior citizen in this situation is oftentimes almost totally dependent upon their caregiver, who may well be their abuser. As you relied on them to look after you in your youth, you may have to look after your loved ones, and stick up for them, in their later years. Here are some things to keep an eye out for.
Some bruising is predictable and natural, whether your 8 or 80 years old. However, keep an eye out for bruises in areas where aggressors usually grab people. These areas include the arms, the shoulders and the neck. If a pattern of bruises looks an awful lot like it would fit the shape of a hand, there’s likely a problem.
The classic “fell out of bed” or “ran into the door” excuse is not an adequate explanation of a black eye. If you press your hand into your face, you’ll realize that your eye is unlikely to be bruised due to a fall or bump into a flat surface. Your nose and teeth are far more prominent. If an elder has a black eye, it’s usually because of a blow to the face, just as is the case with anyone else.
These can result from the friction from restraints or from outright torture, such as burning with cigarettes or heated pieces of metal. Senior abuse, unfortunately, does sometimes resemble the worst torture scenarios you can envision.
The physical signs of sexual abuse may be the most difficult to notice. Oftentimes, there’s a lot of shame and humiliation involved, and the elder may want to pretend it didn’t happen. This only benefits the abuser. Bleeding, bruising and tearing in the privates are all signs of sexual abuse.
A nursing home neglect attorney can help you with this. In addition to their own expertise, they have experts in the specific areas of abuse that tend to affect seniors at such distressing rates. If someone has abused you or your loved one, you do have a legal recourse and can seek compensation for the injuries, both medical and physical.
