Why Nursing Home Mistreatment is Hard to Detect

Elderly WomanNursing home mistreatment is maddeningly easy for abusers to cover up. When children are abused, the floodgates usually open at some point and the entire story comes out, eventually leading to an end to the abuse. With senior citizens, the situation is much different. Most of the seniors being abused in facilities are being abused by individuals much younger than them who have an obvious physical advantage. For a senior citizen, one of the hardest things to accept is that your body is no longer as strong or capable as it once was and, therefore, that you can easily be victimized.

This brings up a lot of issues related to pride, dignity and simple ego. It’s hard for the victims of senior abuse to talk about it without being a bit embarrassed. If you consider their situation, you’d likely feel a lot like them. For that reason, it’s important to pay attention to clues and signs that there may be abuse going on. In some cases, this simply means paying attention to and spending time with your loved one. In good nursing homes, the staff will usually encourage you to spend as much time as possible with your loved one.

Getting elder abuse help has to start with either having good evidence that there’s abuse going on or getting the senior citizen at risk to open up about what’s going on. You may need help in this regard. Sometimes, it’s easier for a senior citizen to talk to a professional about these issues than a family member. Especially if you’re dealing with your own parents, it may be very hard for them to be vulnerable in front of you. If you know there’s an issue that needs to be addressed, consider getting outside help.

If it turns out that abuse was going on, you may want to contact a nursing home neglect attorney. They’ll know how to proceed and, most importantly, they’ll know how to do so in a way that is sensitive to the emotional and psychological needs of your loved one. This ensures that your loved one is not made to feel as if they’re helpless or without options. In fact, a good lawyer can explain to them exactly what their options are and, with good representation, no one is truly helpless, no matter what situation they find themselves mired in.
