Is Your Loved One Being Over Medicated In A Texas Nursing Home?

This month we brought you the story of Barbara Gibson, who is suing a Texas-based nursing home after they severely over medicated her for over a year. Gibson entered the nursing home a healthy senior who was mobile, alert, and verbal. But after just a few months in her abusive nursing home, she was wheelchair bound, drooling, uncommunicative, and in a semi-conscious state.

Unfortunately, over medication issues in nursing homes are all too common – and not as obvious as classical signs of adult care facility neglect and abuse such as bed sores, dirty, linens, or bruises. Why do nursing home workers sometimes overmedicate their patients? There are two main reasons: they want to incapacitate residents or they simply make careless and dangerous mistakes.

In some over medication nursing home cases, the adult care center may be understaffed or lacking in proper security for residents. Instead of attempting to watch and care for what may be dozens of mobile and conscious elders with various needs, a staffer or other nursing home authority may over medicate patients in order to keep them quiet, immobile, and easier to care for. Especially with trouble patients or patients with forms of dementia, over medication is a way to keep elders from moving about or making a fuss. This medication may or may not be prescribed to them.

Over medication has a number of dangers. Nursing home residents who are overmedicated are much more likely to suffer from pressure sores, malnutrition, and dehydration. At the same time, the high doses of medications can be harmful to their health. Finally, over-medication destroys what could be good years for elders in the care of nursing homes – it can rob your loved one of conscious, content time on earth.
