Product Defect and Car Rollovers

How Deadly is a Car Rollover?

A car rollover is defined as an automobile that tips onto its side or roof during any portion of a vehicle crash. These Car Rolloverdangerous type of car wrecks can increase the likelihood that there will be injuries or death. In a 2007 National Highway Traffic Safety Association report, over 4,100 fatalities and 89,000 injuries were recorded. At 21.5 percent, the proportion of automobiles that rolled over in fatal crashes was four times as high as injury crashes at 5.8 percent. During the same year, over 3,800 passenger cars suffered rollovers.

What Can Cause a Car Rollover?

There are many reasons why a car rollover happens. Given the right conditions, any car has the potential to rollover. More than 40 percent of fatal rollover crashes involve high speeds. When people ignore posted speed limit signs, they are putting themselves in danger of possibly experiencing a car rollover.

Below are a few causes of vehicle rollovers:

Impairment - Nearly half of all fatal car rollover wrecks can be attributed to alcohol or drug impairment. When drinking and driving, a person's vision, judgment and coordination are negatively affected. The same is for prescription drugs and narcotics.

Location - Close to 75 percent of car rollovers happen in rural areas. In smaller towns, roads usually are undivided two-way roads or divided roads without barriers. A car can be tripped by soft soil from the side of the road. This can greatly increase the chance of a car rollover.

Product Liability- Rollover accidents can sometimes be caused by a design flaw or product defects.

Improper Tire Pressure - It is important to maintain proper tire pressure and check for worn tires to prevent a car rollover. When a car has tires that are improperly inflated, it limits the ability to control the vehicle. Worn tires have a tendency to slide on wet/slippery pavement.

Incorrect Maneuvering - Most car rollovers occur when drivers overcorrect their steering while driving. This can happen due to someone avoiding something directly ahead by swerving to the side at high speeds.

When a Car Rollover becomes Deadly

Although car rollovers can involve more than one vehicle, they are often times one car accidents. In a news report from Standard.net, a woman was killed in a single-car rollover accident. The police report stated that the driver overcorrected the vehicle and rolled the vehicle into the center median. The car had four occupants inside. In another news report from the Salina Journal, a woman was injured after her car drifted off the road, hit a ditch and subsequently rolled over several times.
