Distracted Drivers: A Huge Risk

Over the years, Americans have become very aware of the risks of drunk driving and the rates of drunk driving have gone down significantly compared to where they were decades ago. It's not uncommon for people to stop their friends from driving they know that they've had a few too many and it's not uncommon for people to call in a drunk driver when they see them out on the road.

Texas Auto Accident LawyerOne threat that's becoming more prevalent, however, is distracted driving. According to an article on Jacksonville.com, distracted driving accidents are underreported. The article goes on to say that federal regulators estimate that, at any time during the day, 11% of the people on the road are engaging in one of the most dangerous activities that you can do while driving: talking on your cell phone.

Distracted driving can be a serious threat. According to the same article, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claims that 5,000 people were killed because of a driver that was driving while distracted. The report also estimates that almost 500,000 were injured in that same year. In the intervening years, cell phone usage has gone up and new features, of course, make cellular phones even more distracting than they were years ago.

Avoiding These Drivers

Watch out for cars that are making sudden swerves, driving erratically and for drivers who are cradling their cell-phone on their shoulder. They may be drunk, in the former cases, but they are certainly distracted in all of these cases. The drivers who tend to be on their cell phones while they're driving are much more likely to be paying attention to the conversation that they're involved in and much less likely to be paying attention to anything that's going on around them. Be sure you watch out.

If you're Hurt

If you're injured because someone was driving distracted, you may be able to file a claim against them for negligence. A good car accident attorney in Dallas can talk to you about filing a lawsuit that could help win you compensation for your injuries. Drivers have every right to expect that the people they share the road with are paying attention to what's going on around them. When they end up being injured because someone's not paying attention, calling a car wreck lawyer to discuss the matter is always a good idea.
