When to Address Elder Abuse

Senior abuse needs to be addressed as quickly and efficiently as possible. This is sometimes made more difficult by a senior citizen’s hesitancy to address what may be embarrassing or uncomfortable issues. Where child abuse is concerned, you’re dealing with a young person who expects their parents and other adults to protect them. In cases where a senior is being abused, you’re dealing with an adult who, in reality, probably knows a lot more about the world than you, but who is too advanced in age to defend themselves.

Some nursing home mistreatment is physical. The signs of it may include burns, cuts, bruises and injury to the genitals. Be particularly diligent about checking areas of the body where someone is likely to be grabbed in anger. The neck, shoulders and arms are frequently used to throw people around. If you see bruises in these areas, do not hesitate to make an issue out of it. If there’s no reason that those bruises should be there, consider it a warning sign.Texas Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer

The delicate part of all of this is reporting elder abuse without compromising the pride of the elder affected. While it’s natural to want to come to the rescue of loved ones, remember that they may be accustomed to coming to your rescue; after all, they may be your parents or grandparents. This can be a tough thing to do correctly. There is also a chance that, in their desire to avoid talking about the abuse, they may claim that you’re calling them a liar for not acknowledging it. Be prepared for some difficulty and understand that a lot of what abused people suffer is psychological more than physical. In fact, those psychological wounds take much longer to heal.

Nursing home abuse lawyers can help you to address these issues. There may be a criminal case involved, as well, but you do have the option to file a lawsuit, in some cases. Filing a claim to recover your financial damages, plus money for pain and suffering, is sometimes the best way to address these issues. Moving your loved one to another facility will be expensive, and there is no reason that you and your loved one should have to foot that bill because you were betrayed by an abusive facility that failed to come through on their promise of care giving.
