Even for truckers themselves, truck wrecks are terrifying. In a wreck, the mass of these trucks can turn a passenger car into a twisted heap of steel in less than a second. Truck wrecks can be deadly. They are generally very stable vehicles due to their weight, but when they go out of control that weight makes them even more dangerous. The fact that they have a trailer attached adds additional weight and presents its own hazards.

In some cases, a wrongful death attorney is hired to represent the victims of a truck wreck who lost a loved one. This is far too common an occurrence. While there are some crashes that cannot be avoided and that will take lives, no matter what the driver does, there are some things you need to avoid when you’re sharing the road with these vehicles.

Watch out for truckers who seem like they’re lost or like they’re just plain bad drivers. Not all truckers have the same levels of training and experience and, even among those that do have the training and experience, not all of them are good at their jobs. If a truck is making maneuvers that seem erratic or like the driver is in a rush, stay away from them. If one of them starts racing you when you’re trying to merge at an entrance ramp, let them win. Pull over if you have to. An incompetent trucker is a serious danger to everyone around them.

A very frightening number of truckers report falling asleep behind the wheel. If you see a semi start drifting toward you from an opposite lane, get out of the way immediately. The last thing you want to do is basically play “chicken” with them, assuming that they’ll drift back before you get too close. Tired drivers drive very similar to drunk drivers, so be sure to watch out for these signs when you’re out on the roads.

If a truck has caused you injury in a crash, you may end up facing a very large and powerful company. Sometimes, they’ll try to play good guy and offer you a check right away. Don’t take it. Talk to a personal injury lawyer. These firms have significant legal obligations and, if they’re sending tired or incompetent drivers out on the road, you may be able to win financial compensation for your pain and suffering due to the accident.
