Doctors are actually not the only people that can be sued for medical malpractice. There are numerous different types of medical professionals that may be sued for malpractice. The nature of the lawsuit, however, will vary depending upon who you’re actually pressing the suit against.

Dentists

Dentists are medical doctors and, as such, they may be sued for malpractice. Cases against dentists are rarer than those against regular medical doctors, but they do happen. Their negligence can be just as harmful as the negligence of a regular doctor, so there’s no reason that patients should feel like they have no recourse if they suffer because a dentist didn’t deliver in their duties.

Nurses and Paramedics

These lawsuits are usually a bit different than those filed against a medical doctor. These individuals are usually in the employ of a hospital or clinic and it is that facility against whom the lawsuit is generally filed. Nurses provide the majority of patient care and paramedics provide care in emergency situations, so there are plenty of occasions where their malpractice is particularly dangerous to their patients.

Independent Doctors and Doctors at Hospitals

Most of the time, the doctor is sued directly in these cases. The suit is actually against their insurance company, but the doctor is the one who is being blamed for the negligence or incompetence. When doctors work at a hospital, they usually do so under contract, not as a regular employee, so they are liable for their own malpractice.

Healthcare Facilities

Healthcare facilities are sometimes directly named in these suits. When they fail to maintain proper standards of cleanliness, for example, they may end up being the party most responsible for the medical malpractice.

Alternative Practitioners

There are few instances when these practitioners can be sued for any type of malpractice. They don’t have the same type of licensing as do legitimate doctors and, therefore, they aren’t always covered by the same laws. They may be sued otherwise, in some cases, if they cause someone to come to harm.

The best way to find out who is liable for malpractice is to talk to a Dallas medical malpractice lawyer and see what they have to say. They have experience with the laws that apply to all the different healthcare providers out there and are the most reliable sources of information about any type of lawsuit you may want to pursue.
