Check In On Elder Loved Ones On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Every June, organizations around the world acknowledge Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a time to both teach those around you about the dangerous and prevalence of elder abuse and to check in on the elder loved ones in your own life. At Rasansky Law Firm, we understand that one of the best ways to prevent elder abuse – or to stop elder abuse form continuing – is to know the signs of nursing home abuse and nursing home neglect and to communicate often and openly your elder relatives.
• Look for physical signs of abuse and neglect, such as bruising, rashes, bed sores, and cuts. • Examine the room for cleanliness and safety – are the bed sheets and floor clean? Are your loved one’s clothes clean and taken care of? • Pay attention to the nursing home staff – are they reluctant to leave you in the room with your loved one? Do they seem stressed or agitated? Is the nursing home suffering from staffing shortages? • If you are able, talk to your loved one. Ask how they are feeling, how they like their residence, whether they like the food, and whether they are being treated well. • Look for any signs of change – changes in weight, changes in attentiveness, changes in mood, and changes in alertness. These changes could be red flags for nursing home abuse and neglect, or they could be signs that your loved one is having an unrelated medical problem that needs immediate attention.
