Advocacy Group: Dallas Police Need Elder Abuse Investigation Training

Posted on Apr 27, 2010

Advocates for the elderly and for nursing home residents say that Texas nursing home abuse and neglect cases need faster and better investigations, with more communication between the police and the Department of Aging and Disability Services. In addition, the group says that Texas Police should receive training specifically for investigating nursing home abuse cases.

The nonprofit Texas Advocates for Nursing Home Residents spoke out after the recent allegations of nursing home abuse at a Big Spring veterans’ home, where two nursing home staffers have been indicted for their treatment of residents in 2007. The Texas Advocates for Nursing Home Residents said that the lack of coordination in the case is the reason that it was not dealt with more quickly.

In the incident, which occurred at the Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez State Veterans Home, 97-year-old veteran John Harris was slammed into his bed from his wheelchair by a certified nurse aide. The elder abuse incident was considered a priority two matter, meaning that investigators had two weeks to respond. In a different incident at the same nursing home, a resident who had an ice cream cone smashed in her face was considered a priority one matter that was dealt with in 24 hours. Investigators for Texas nursing homes are struggling to keep up with incident reports and face a huge backlog of Texas nursing home abuse cases.

In the former case, the Howard County district attorney, state investigators, and Texas police struggled to get to the bottom of the case for over two years, with witness reports and other evidence getting lost between agencies and departments.

Texas Police get no specialized training for how to investigate nursing home abuse.
