Austin Doctor Drunk And Drugged Before Treating Patient

Posted on Aug 12, 2010

Could your doctor be drunk or on drugs while he is examining you or while he is performing surgery on you? As a recent arrest in Austin proves, it is absolutely possible.

According to the Houston Examiner, Dr. Felix Nabor Sabates of Baytown was pulled over by a Montgomery County police officer and arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Sabates was driving recklessly and erratically on an Austin highway, sometimes topping speeds of 100 miles per hour. When police questioned him, he was dressed in hospital attire and said that he was on his way to the hospital to check on a patient. Officers placed him under arrest after noticing his odd behavior, his bloodshot eyes, and his pupil size.

When authorities searched the Texas doctor’s car, they found a myriad of prescription drugs in blank bottles – including Adderall, morphine, and hydrocodone -- and capsules containing cocaine.  Sabates has been charged with two misdemeanors and four felonies.

However, shockingly, despite his history of substance abuse, mental illness, and reckless behavior, the Texas Medical Board is allowing the man to continue practicing medicine and coming into contact with patients in Baytown. In the recent past, the medical board allowed him to keep his license despite an alcohol addiction, drug addiction, and a suicide attempt. In 2001, he was reprimanded for “not practicing medicine in a suitable or professional manner.”

How many times does a doctor have to break the law in Texas before he is no longer allowed to practice?
